The hormones that control the changes during puberty do not only produce physical changes, but emotional changes also. These hormones can cause lots of powerful emotions.
The levels of a hormone called testosterone are extremely high in boys during puberty and this can cause them to feel more angry than normal. Testosterone also makes your brain become more interested in sex.
Girls on the other hand may be experiencing their first episode of pre-menstrual tension (PMT). This can lead to them feeling irritable and a little down.
Being moody isn't the only thing young people have to cope with. Pressure to fit in over a whole range of issues such as smoking, drug and alcohol use, and sex all add to the stress of growing up.
There are different things you can do to try and help lift your mood:
- Get out in the fresh air.
- Do some exercise, even go for a short walk.
- Listen to some music you like.
- If you feel angry try going into your room and punching a pillow.
- Talk to someone you trust.
- Write down your feelings, perhaps in a diary.
