Body Changes

Body Size & Shape

During puberty you will notice a growth spurt, usually in your feet first. You'll become taller and you arms and legs will become longer making you more clumsy than usual. You are likely to get taller before your shoulders broaden. When this happens you will notice muscles begin to develop, especially in your arms, legs and chest. This will make you stronger, and will probably notice it when playing sport.

Your body shape will change a lot during puberty and you may find that the muscle will cause you to weigh more. Some boys will notice an increase in their breast size, this is normal and due to the development of muscle and fat around the chest.

Body Hair

Armpit hairOne of the earliest signs of puberty is the growth of hair under your arms and above your penis. At first there are usually only one or two hairs but these quickly multiply. You'll also find more hair on your legs and the backs of your hands. Facial hair doesn't usually appear until the original hair increases. At first the facial hair will be quite light and you'll only need to start shaving after a few months. Some hair may also appear on your chest and not all men have this.

Voice Breaking

Voices breakingThe male sex hormone, testosterone will make your voice box at the front of your neck grow bigger and it will change shape. This will mean your Adam's apple (the bit at the front of your neck, which moves up and down when you swallow) becomes more obvious and your voice will get deeper. This can happen very suddenly, even overnight, or it can take quite some time. Your voice will be high and squeaky one minute and low the next. There is little you can do to control this, which may lead to people teasing you. This can be upsetting but remember it's part of growing up.
