We go holiday to have a good time and have some fun. Some people may want to relax, others may go clubbing, while some people might want to have a holiday romance. When on holiday you might do things you wouldn't normally do at home. This might mean drinking more than usual, taking drugs or having sex with someone you've just met. Have friends with you and make sure you all look after each other by letting each other know where you are and who you are with. It's important to enjoy your holidays but don't put yourself at risk whilst doing so.
Did you know?
- Research has shown people have a higher risk of acquiring a sexually transmitted infection (STI) whilst abroad.
- In the UK, most people newly diagnosed with HIV are infected in another country. Some of these people are immigrants and some are holiday-makers.
- You don't have to be gay or a drug user to get HIV or any STI, in fact, most of the people who are HIV- positive aren't in either of these groups.
- You can catch some infections through oral sex. See the section on infections in the website for more information on how to protect yourself.
- Each country has its own laws about alcohol, drugs and the age of consent. Make sure you know the law where you are and you're not committing a crime.
Don't forget your condoms
When you're on holiday, relaxed and having a good time, you may end up in situations you hadn't intended. So, even if you don't plan to have sex on holiday, make sure you carry condoms, just in case.
In different countries the quality of condoms may differ from those in the UK. Make sure you pick up some free condoms at your local clinic before you go (see the directory to find your nearest service). If you forget, ask a friend, or ask in a pharmacy. Also remember things like sun lotions and direct sunlight can weaken condoms. Store them in a cool, dry place and use water based lubricants like K-Y jelly. Practice putting condoms on before you go so you are prepared if the situation arises.
Enjoy your holiday!
Whatever you get up to, be safe and enjoy your holiday!
