Sex Education

What do schools teach about sex?

All schools are expected to provide education about relationships and sex. The Scottish Executive has provided guidance to ensure all schools present sex education in a sensitive and non-biased way. The school should also consult with parents/carers about their programmes. You may wish to enquire about what your child's school is doing. You can do this in a number of ways including:

  • Requesting to see a copy of the sex education policy and/or a copy of the sex education programme for your child's class. This will allow you to support what the school is doing at home.
  • Ask to see the resources used in the classroom. You may be able to borrow books or videos to use with your child at home.

If you disagree with some aspect of the sex education that your child is receiving, make an appointment with the school's headteacher or PSE Co-ordinator to discuss this.
