What is Andropause?
The word andropause originates from Greek and means "when masculinity ceases". It is used to describe a condition in men similar to the female menopause, except that it does not end fertility.
In men, the production of the hormone testosterone gradually decreases from about age 60. This is part of a normal ageing process.
Andropause & male mid-life crisis?
Andropause should not be confused with what has been called the "male mid-life crisis" which occurs at around the age of 40. This is essentially an emotional reaction to a re-evaluation of personal circumstances which might have social and physical consequences.
The andropause is a physical condition with symptoms similar to the effects experienced by some women undergoing menopause and include fatigue, loss of libido, sexual problems, depression, irritability, aches and pains, sweating and flushing.
Testing & Treatment
An abnormally low level of testosterone can be detected by blood tests, and testosterone replacement therapy may be considered in such cases.
Men going through the andropause may benefit from counselling to deal with the consequences of the andropause, although counselling will not cure the physical symptoms.
